horitzó: the portal of the Costa Brava

All through the year there is a reason for celebration in the populations of the Costa Brava: from the Carnival in February, the Spring Festival, the sea processions and town festivals in the summer season to the Beer Festival in October or Christmas time.
You can know more about the festivals going on in our zone through this section.
If your celebration does not appear in this section, let us know in : info@horitzo.net
Carnival (February/March):

A light, colour and rhythm explosion with fiesta, a lot fiesta. That is the way the towns in the Costa Brava live their carnivals.  Floats and groups pass through the streets of Sant Feliu de Guixols, Santa Cristina d'Aro, Platja d'Aro, Calonge, Sant Antoni, Palamós, Roses...

Sant Jordi's day (23rd April):

On April 23rd Catalonia celebrates one of its most important feasts: Sant Jordi (Saint George’s day).  The inhabitants of the Costa Brava go out the street to share a day in which there is a tradition: men and women exchange a book and a rose as a love proof. Booksellers and florists spend all day in their stands: it is the feast of the book and the booksellers and a lover’s celebration.

Palafrugell’s Spring Festival:

It was born in 1963, after the carnival prohibition. This peculiar carnival lasts for a whole weekend and the most important celebration is Costa Brava’s Carousel. Floats and groups, both local and from all around Catalonia, take part in this parade

Sant Joan's Festival (23rd June):

Sant Joan’s night (23rd of June) is a magic night. Fire and music become the main characters all together with open-air dance in the streets of cities and towns. It is a tradition eating St. Joan’s “coca” that is a cake filled with cream and covered with crystallized fruit- and dancing until dawn while throwing rockets and firecrackers.

Sea processions (July):

Sea processions are habitual in some places of the Costa Brava. They take place on July the 16th (Carmen’s day) for celebrating fishermen’s patron saint. In those processions, boats follow the image of their Virgin in their way. The most important are the ones of Palamós and Sant Feliu de Guixols.

Town Festivals:

Summer is the time when most of the town festivals in the Costa Brava are celebrated. Popular traditions and music events join together: “habaneras” (typical Catalan sort of music, originally played by fishermen), “sardanas” (Catalan dance and music), “cremats” (Catalan rum drink), giants and “cabezudos” (figures with a huge head), fireworks and concerts…

Platja d'Aro’s beer festival

In October Platja d’Aro lives its peculiar Oktoberfest, a great beer festival. A good chance for tasting up to 25 national and imported brands at an affordable price. Some of the stands also offer a wide variety of gourmet products. Music animation is guaranteed with all kind of performances. You can get a commemorative jug in each edition, which many visitors collect year after year.

Human Nativity Scenes (Christmas):

The inhabitants of the area become just for a few days in shepherds, lumberjacks or Saint Joseph. You will enjoy magnificent representations of the traditional mangers. The most important one takes place in Castell d'Aro. Second half of December.

“Pastorets” (December - January):

Theatrical plays of great tradition in these dates. The plot combines the birth of Jesus, the fight between good and evil -angels and devils- and several stories of shepherds recalling the first Christmas.
A great theatrical staging represented in populations such as Sant Feliu de Guixols, Pals or Palafrugell, from the second half of December until the first week of January.
